Background Information

Ubungo Gas Plant II is located in Dar es Salaam at Ubungo, near to Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco) Head Office. The power plant was constructed in a bid to improve the country’s power capacity. Its construction began in 2011 and concluded in 2012. Ubungo Gas Plant II was commissioned in 2012 with an installed capacity of 105 Megawatts consisting of three SGT-800 industrial type turbines of 35 MW each, and is connected to the national grid via 132KV at Ubungo substation. Currently it uses natural gas that comes from Mtwara via the TPDC gas pipelines.

Operation and Inauguration

The US$ 129 million Ubungo II Gas Plant started commercial operation in 29th May, 2012 and was officially inaugurated by the Hon Minister of Energy and Minerals (MEM) Prof. Sospeter Muhongo on 01st July, 2012. In 2016 two turbines’ capacities were upgraded from 35 MW to 43 MW each, which are GT2 and GT3.
